What is NALA?

  • A long-established association for those who provide advice, support, training and inspection in the languages field.
  • Entirely independent but working closely with organisations such as APPG, Ofqual, ALL, ISMLA, UCML, British Academy, examination boards and cultural agencies.
  • Highly regarded nationally for the expertise, experience and judgement of our members.
  • Influential in the development of national and local languages policy.

  • The association having a positive impact on the teaching and learning of languages.

Who is eligible to apply?

NALA members are advisers who:

  • have a broad and deep understanding of the field of language teaching and learning in UK primary and/or secondary schools, initial teacher training, FE and HE;
  • ask questions to develop a detailed understanding of a school/department/trust’s context;
  • use their professional knowledge and experience in an agile way, tailoring it to contextual needs and aspirations;
  • are able to draw on their considerable professional experience to research, prepare and develop a range of solutions;
  • provide advice and guidance and/or make recommendations with regard to current practice or future action;
  • support school leaders and languages teachers to rigorously self-evaluate the impact of the improvement strategies they choose to adopt;
  • offer their professional opinion, without fear or favour.
