This survey for the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) was trailed at an All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) modern languages meeting last year. It was conducted by Dr Lucas Nunes Vieira of the University of Bristol as part of ‘Critical Language Barriers’, a project funded by the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council.
The report begins with a compact summary of the findings and recommendations. Although the focus is not on education, the ethical considerations and operational pitfalls of machine translation are issues educators need to be aware of.
The preliminary report (October 2024) has been published by the CIOL and can be accessed at this link.
